Activities
Šumava can fill a whole week, and does it differently in every season. Here is what lies closest and where we go ourselves.
Eight minutes by car. Nine kilometres of pistes, two lifts and night skiing until eight.
The nearest large ski area and the reason half our winter guests come here. Zadov and Churáňov offer runs of every difficulty, including two children's slopes with carpet lifts and a ski school.
Ski passes can be bought online, which saves queuing at the ticket office. You can leave your skis overnight in our ski room, where there is also a boot dryer.
The groomed trails start two hundred metres from the house. In season they are prepared every other day.
The Šumava Magistrála is among the best cross-country terrain in the country — more than 300 kilometres of groomed trails in all. A connecting track runs from us to the main route towards Churáňov and on to Kvilda.
Loops can be put together from an easy eight kilometres up to full-day outings with a train ride back. The current grooming report is posted in the entrance hall and we can send it to your phone in the morning.
Twenty minutes by car. The highest village in the country and a source reached by an interpretive trail.
Kvilda lies at 1,065 metres and is the springboard to the wildest part of Šumava. From the car park it is three kilometres to the source of the Vltava along an easy path manageable even with a pushchair.
Jezerní slať is worth a stop on the way — a peat bog with a viewing tower and the coldest place in the country. In winter it is often ten degrees colder there than here in Stachy, so dress accordingly.
In summer the pistes turn into trails. The lift takes your bike up too.
Six trails from blue to black, a flowline for beginners and wooden features for those who already know what they are doing. Bike and protector hire is right at the bottom station.
If you prefer your own pace, a marked cycle route runs from us over Churáňov and on to Kašperské Hory. Bikes can be left in the cellar unit and there is a service stand in the ski room.
The highest-lying royal castle in Bohemia, twenty-five minutes by car.
Charles IV had it built in 1356 to guard the Golden Trail. There are two guided routes — the basic hour-long tour and a longer one that includes the tower, from which on a clear day you can see as far as the Alps.
In season there are night tours and fencing displays, for which it is better to book ahead.
The marked trails begin just beyond the bridge over the Spůlka. No need to drive anywhere.
A blue waymarked route leads from the house along the stream valley to Zdíkovec, from where you can carry on to Javorník and the Klostermann lookout tower — 14 kilometres in all with 400 metres of ascent, a good full day.
The shorter option is a loop to Popelná and back, roughly two hours. You will find a map with suggestions in the apartment and we are happy to advise based on the weather.
There are a few places nearby we go to ourselves and can recommend without hesitation.
In Stachy there is a guesthouse restaurant serving honest Czech cooking with its own beer — five minutes on foot. On Zadov, Dobrá chata has a view and a decent kitchen; in Kvilda there is a café with its own roastery and a cake worth the drive.

For when it rains or you need a day without a hill.
Kašperské Hory offers the Šumava Museum with its collection of reverse glass painting, a museum of historic motorcycles and bicycles, and a handsome square with cafés. Half an hour by car.
For families with children the alternative is the rope park or a brewery tour. A rainy day can be filled without trouble.
